Japanese Culture: Wearing a headband with 2 Candles strapped on each side?

Posted on March 13th, 2010 by admin

I watch a lot of anime and many times I’ve come across characters wearing headbands with items strapped on both sides of their heads, especially lit candles. All of the times I’ve seen characters wear these were in comic situations.

My question is where did this come from? Was it influenced by Japanese culture?

Thank you, your help is greatly appreciated.

P.S. I’ve also seen carrots strapped with the headbands.

It’s the traditional costume when somebody wants to curse the other.

I think that it comes from the movie "Yatsuhakamura" based on the real serial murder case in Japan.
Actually they are not candles but flashlights.

    Video.

"seen carrots strapped with the headbands" came from the phrase "enticing carrot", which conjures us the image that horses will keep running if you dangle carrots in front of their faces.
