Can someone tell me why A LOT of anime nerds think they’re japanese or experts on their culture?

Because it seems like a lot of hardcore anime nerds pretend to be experts on japanese culture, which is actually pretty racist because its assuming all japanese are otakus who want to grow up to be anime-artists. Furthermore, why does everyone who knows nothing about anime think its about robots and knights?
i love anime, i don’t read a lot of manga, and i don’t consider myself an authority on Japanese culture. although i am fascinated by it, and would like to learn more about it. out of the all languages i wish to learn Japanese it’s definitely in my top 3, and who doesn’t want to visit Tokyo.

My little brother is a devote fan of anime, speaks japanese (almost fluently) and has been to Japan, several times, including living there for 2 different summers. The Japanese friends he now has don’t seem to mind.
And they aren’t saying they are experts on the people, just that particular aspect of the Japanese culture.
I know almost nothing about anime and it’s culture, but I know it can be about different stuff.

Some of my experiences with anime fans have been interesting. I have known people that range from casual readers of one or two titles or watch one or two shows to ninja-star carrying, Naruto headband wearing, Octopus flavored ramen and Pocky eating freaks.
I love em, but the constant carrying on about Japanese this, anime that can be annoying though.
