itadakimasu is a …
itadakimasu is a conjugation of the verb “itadaku” which means “to receive”. It is a very polite/formal verb. Saying it before a meal means “I receive (this food) (from someone respected)”. In that sense it is similar to grace as noted above.
In Japan’s hierarchical society, you could ALSO use it to say you received something from a superior or respected person.
ie “sensei kara hon o itadakimasu”
= ” I (will) receive a book from my teacher”

a more effective and possibly correct way would be to watch Let’s Learn Japanese (the cheesy series) and Pimsleur Japanese and other stuff to learn Kanji, Katakana, and Hiragana.
