Why do people say the US "has no culture" when it does have a lot of culture, that influences other countrie?

Posted on April 29th, 2011 by admin

Not only does it have a lot of culture, it has influenced *other* countries with it’s culture.
The US has borrowed cultures just like any other country in the past.

But now, you see tons of other countries with hip hop music, which is a very deep part of black american culture.

Rock music from the US and the UK has influenced many countries. Rock music is a big part of Japan’s culture now.

Then there is Fast Food culture(many might think is bad but w/e) and obviously other countries have not many problems with having all these restaurants in their countries.

Then we have the Creole American people which have kept a lot of French background in their culture. They fled from Canada a long time ago.
Then all the other minority cultures like the Amish, Quakers,…This dates back a long time ago..

Hollywood has influenced the world with the movie stars and everything. India even has a "Bollywood" that is now very popular in south asia..

If the US has no culture then how could we influence all these countries with our music and movies and food etc?

It’s hard to believe the US has no culture when I walk around Seoul seeing asians listening to hip hop and such. hip hop is big in korea.
@ Mr. Warrior Like I said, EVERY country has borrowed other cultures, including French Canadians and British.

Music is NOT only a product.
It is one of the BIGGEST parts of culture.

Fast food is NOT only a product, it is also part of our culture. Food is ANOTHER big part of culture.

hollywood IS our pop culture, that is another big part.

So many countries have been influenced by OUR cultures these days. You just can’t handle that.

I totally disagree with Mr. Warrior! "Products" are a huge part of the culture and a reflection of the culture. Since I’ve been in Korea, I have heard people say the "USA has no culture," but I totally agree that a lot of countries borrow from our culture and I think most people acknowledge it. I have a lot of Japanese, Korean, and Chinese friends here and we’ve talked about how their is kind of a "culture flow." Things become popular in the U.S., move to Japan, and then spill over into Korea. Still not sure how China fits into the puzzle. ;-) Anyways, just ignore those kind of people. Every nation has a culture and it’s just ignorance so there’s not much you can do about it!^^

How does the chinese or japanese language work?

Posted on April 19th, 2011 by admin

I’m confused… I’ve heard there are tens of thousands of characters in the Chinese language. I’ve heard that an educated person in Chinese needs to learn around 6000 characters? How is a person supposed to remember over 6000 letters and then use them in words. That sounds crazy! I’m a little confused on how the language is structured. In English there are 26 letters and different combinations make different words, but I’ve heard in Chinese one character can mean a whole word. Also how is Japanese structured? Is it the same as Chinese or is it different.

the hard part is learning japanese because it is mainly build on 4 languages being hanzi one of them. Your logic is flawed. Even though english is composed of 26 alphabets but you still have to remember the order of the letter to make a word, so you will have to remember all the orders for the word. In Chinese, there is also structure meaning some words are combined to form a word. Like metal will combine with another word to form a new word because that new word (a material) is related to metal. So words are combined together that related to the two words that it originates.

What are some things to know about the culture of japan if im going to live there coming from the US?

Posted on April 12th, 2011 by admin

culture differences, stuff they do different than americans, basically stuff i should kno before going there besides learning japanese. thanks! ^^

Politeness.
Don’t start your conversation with
1) In the US, we have…
2) In the US, we do…
3) In the US, we don’t…
4) We Americans think…
etc, etc…

When you are in Japan, you should be aware of the fact that you are in totally different cultural environment. The Japanese don’t care about your life in the US. Majority of the Japanese reaction would be SO WHAT?
When in Rome, do as the Romans do.
when in Japan, do as the Japanese do.

Should I Avoid Eating Japanese Food due to Nuclear Radiation?

Posted on April 10th, 2011 by admin

I live in NY and I was wondering should I avoid eating Japanese food due to Nuclear Radiation?
I found out from transit forum that trace of radiation reach NY.
Metropolitan Museum of Art has Sushi.
Most shopping malls has Japanese food also.

>The Japanese are fanatical about their food and I think they will not let any contaminated food leave Japan. However, you cannot say the same thing about fish which might be living around Japan but caught by unscrupulous merchants or fisherman. You might want to wait on the sushimi.

Where to get good Japanese food in Tennessee?

Posted on April 9th, 2011 by admin

So, I love REAL Japanese food (and culture, I’m learning the language).
I don’t like California rolls, or any of the kind of Americanized stuff. I like sashimi and nigiri (salmon and tuna are my favorites), eel, steamed rice, a good pot of nabe, cold noodles, raw tofu with soy sauce, ect. But where can I get really GREAT authentic food in Tennessee?

What city ? Go to the web site below and type in the city you want and then Japanese restaurants.
The way to tell if a place is good or not ? If it’s mostly non-Asians eating there then you know it’s not any good.
Most places here are "Americanized " though.

How is Japanese culture different than American culture?

Posted on April 7th, 2011 by admin

What are some ways that Japanese culture is different than American culture?

Has anybody been to Japan, or lived there?

I’ve always been really interested in Japan and want to learn as much about it as I can.

In terms of family, it is tradition in Japan that the elderly parents live with their children. It is the children’s responsibility to take care of their parents when their parents are old. But there are some elderly parents who live alone and away from their children and continue working. My grandparents are living away from us because they are still working and do not want to retire. They are 80s.

In USA, as far as I know, elderly parents are either put in to retirement or nursing homes and their children visit them during holidays or special occasions only.

In terms of society, a vertical society structure is still common here in Japan. Are you familiar with the kohai-senpai system? It’s like that. It can be found in schools, work, family, clubs, etc.

As a culture why is Japan so western?

Posted on April 5th, 2011 by admin

For an eastern country Japan is very westernised, why did they take on our culture while alot of the east support the whole westoxification thing and stick so vigorously to tradition.
Well the west also installed its regimes in the middle east but they totally rejected it and hate us now, what made Japan so different? Religion?

Because similarly, they invaded most of their neighbors/other nations ruthlessly, just like most of the western nations did.

Asian countries (except Japan) never did anything so destructive to that scale.
