How hard is it to master both the Korean and Japanese language?

Posted on April 29th, 2010 by admin

Summers coming up, and I want to learn how to read and understand the Korean and Japanese language. I already speak a different language in Asia, so maybe I would be able to pickup other Asian languages faster. Would it be possible to understand those two languages over one summer vacation by yourself?

I’m a native speaker of Korean and I’m currently learn Japanese (I’m intermediate). I suggest you to learn Korean first and then maybe you could move on to Japanese.

As we know, Korean only has one set of characters, it’s called hangul. You just need to memorize and combine them. You can master it in only a week.

However, the Korean pronunciation sounds difficult for the people who aren’t accustomed to it. But it might easier for you since you already mastered one of the Asian languages (I guess the pronunciation isn’t simple like Japanese).

I’d say you better learn Korean first. It takes a great deal of practice to master a foreign language. You will probably can’t master both languages only in one summer vacation, remember, it takes time. You can’t master a foreign language in a short time; you have to study it step by step.

Where can I find some on line videos teaching you about Japanese Culture?

Posted on April 28th, 2010 by admin

Me and my friend have taken interest in Japan and we want to learn about the culture. Is there any free videos my friend and I could watch to learn about Japan? I already learned the language, so I don’t want any videos teaching me how to speak Japanese. Any free videos out there to learn about Japanese culture?

I would try going to the library and checking out videos made by reputable travel agencies about Japanese culture.

The Japan National Tourist Organization’s website may also give you some good info: http://www.jnto.go.jp/eng/

In Japanese culture "work is a privilege." How do Americans view work? Is one approach superior?

Posted on April 27th, 2010 by admin

I am supposed to ask friends and family members their opinion on the subject, but none of my friends and family members have one, or care to share it with me. So i figured i could ask all of you! Please tell me your opinion on this, whatever it is!

I have been studying the Japanese culture in my World Geography Class and was assigned to ask friends and family members this question and think about it myself, then write a quick one page opinion paper on it. Your help is needed! Thank you!

Yes I agree with the person above me, they highly value teamwork in Japan and learning to love your work is a very important part too. However, here in America, it’s more like people are dragging themselves out of bed (and feel like their FORCED to work) just to support themselves with money, not for the love what they’re doing.

We unfortunately have such pessimistic views on working hard and striving to achieve goals…

Question about Japanese food?

Posted on April 24th, 2010 by admin

Is sushi raw fish?

I’ve tried just about every type of food on the planet except for Japanese food so far. I’ve heard that a lot of their cuisine consists of raw fish, which I am unwilling to try. Raw fish is a bit of a health risk, obviously.

Anyhow, are there cooked sushi options at most Japanese restaurants? I am contemplating on trying out a local Japanese restaurant today. Also, does anyone have any suggestions on what to order?

Sushi means ‘vinegared rice’, it doesnt have to contain raw fish though that is a popular filling. Raw fish isn’t a health risk as long as it is fresh and from a good source.

If you really cant face the idea then try teppanyaki ( hibachi grilled meat and veg ), yakitori ( chicken skewers ), grilled unagi ( eel ), noodle dishes, miso soup, tonkatsu ( breaded pork ), tempura ( seafood or vegetable fritters ) and the selection of Japanese curries instead.

There’s plenty to try which doesn’t involve raw fish.

Where can I buy Japanese language study books in Singapore?

Where can I buy Japanese language study books in Singapore?

I’m going to Singapore next month. I’m thinking of buying Kanji dictionaries, books, etc. Do you think I can get it at the National University of Singapore bookstore? Would you have any other places where I can look to buy books? Thanks.

Hi,
You may be able to get the textbooks they use for lessons in NUS at the Co-op bookstore but other books are really limited the last time I went there.
Kinokuniya Bookstore in Ngee Ann City near Takashimaya has a VERY large Japanese language section and they have the best selection of books. They carry textbooks in English, Japanese, Chinese and a rare few in other languages. I’ve been studying the language for 3 years now and have always gotten my books & practices there.
Try dropping by on a public holiday because Kino usually has a sale going on then in one of their 3 branches. (something like a 10 or 20% storewide discount) They have a counter for electronic dictionaries but I find them rather expensive. It’s cheaper to buy them online.
The Liang Court branch has a smaller collection and the one at Bugis probably has the worst. However even the Bugis branch will have more books than any of the other bookstores around.
Hope you find what you’re looking for! : )

Where can I find Japanese language forums?

Posted on April 20th, 2010 by admin

I don’t mean English forums about Japanese language, but forums written in the Japanese language. Anyone know about any forums like that?

Best bet would be to just use a japanese search engine.

Just enter your favorite search engine as you would normally, just make sure its .jp instead of .com.
example: www.bing.jp

You could then just search "forums" or put in "?????" to search for it in japanese..

If you’re not looking for anything in particular, here’s one of the first page results:

No idea what its about though =)

How do you make Japanese food that tastes like what you get at the hibachi restaurants?

Posted on April 19th, 2010 by admin

Mainly, I’d like to know how to make the terriyaki chicken and the vegetable fried rice, but I want it to taste like what you get at the japanese restaurants. I LOVE japanese food. And an instant 10 points to anyone who can also tell me how to make the white sauce that they give you with your food. Thanks.

Here is a website that has Benihana copycat recipes. For the chicken that you want, use the steak recipe – it’s prepared the same. This website also has the vegetable fried rice and secret sauce that’s made with cream.

I just want to know what colleges have a Japanese language course?
I know how to read and write in Hirigana and Katakana and some Kanji but need to learn more!!

I think all colleges (community colleges or 4 yr colleges) have Japanese language course. Look at the catalog and you should find it.
